ALTYAZI FILM MAGAZINE (2001 - )
www.altyazi.net
Founded in 2001, Altyazı has been Türkiye’s leading print film magazine. Since 2020 it has shifted its editorial focus to digital publishing and video content, decreasing printing to special issues.
In print as an independent magazine with nationwide circulation (around 6000 per issue), Altyazı offered original and critical coverage of cinema, opening a space for everyone interested in a free film culture, from cinephiles to students, academics to film professionals, to express their thoughts on cinema freely for twenty years.
During its 20-year run, Altyazı has actively participated in a number of film-related projects: writing and editing catalogues; curating film programs, sections, and sidebars; and organizing events in cooperation with festivals and institutions. Altyazı has participated extensively in the events related to cinema in Turkey on the international scene, curating cinema programs for international festivals such as Rotterdam Film Festival, Crossing Europe Film Festival. In the digital channels with social media accounts, website and youtube channel, Altyazı has expanded its content and increased its visibility as a film initiative that reviews and reports on film, and opens in-depth discussions in related areas reaching over 400 thousand viewers.
I have been part of Altyazı in various roles throughout its run and still contributing as a Board Member of the Assocation.

A project of Altyazı Cinema Association, Altyazı Fasikül: Free Cinema is a platform that focuses on freedom of expression in cinema. Altyazı Fasikül’s main purpose is to increase the visibility of the works of video and film creators who face risks of government repression and censorship. It aims to strengthen the role and position of independent cinema as a critical force in the cultural politics of Turkey. I am one of co-founders of Altyazı Fasikül and still contributing in the Advisory Board.
As a continuation of our first curated video series Looking
Outside which was favourably received, we decided to design a second one, this time focusing on the nature of recording itself.
From Below is series of 10 videos that contemplate the
importance of recording, witnessing, creating a collective
memory, intervening, chronicling, remembering, and reminding through audio-visual tools; and will do so by using these audio- visual tools themselves.
This project has been realised with the support of European
Endowment For Democracy and CultureCIVIC.
‘Looking Outside’ is a video series developed, curated and realised in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic by Senem Aytaç and Fırat Yücel.
The idea for the project was came out as a reaction to and an urgent call for collective contemplation on the isolating effects of the lockdown during the pandemic.
It was an invitation to video-activists, documentary filmmakers, artists and academics to produce videos that reflect on the ‘outside’ during times of lockdown.
During the pandemic, working closely with artists, video-makers and video-activists, mentoring them in their creative works and forming a compilation of 11 short films as a
video series and realizing talks with the creators after the screenings via
our magazine Altyazı’s Youtube channel.
The project has been realised with the support of European Endowment For Democracy.
